The secrets of tight-knit families

Finding enough time for your family is always a challenge. Throw in restrictions on social gatherings and travel, and it’s even harder to stay connected.

Sure, that might mean you get more spare time on weekends. But at what cost?

Maintaining strong family relationships is crucial to our mental health and wellbeing. According the Department of Health, good family relationships – where members spend time together on activities that everyone enjoys – can strengthen family bonds, make us feel safe and loved, and provide an increased sense of belonging and self-esteem.

Six ways to strengthen your family unit

Just like any relationships, the secret to strong family bonds is to put the effort in. Here are some simple ways you can do it:

  1. Set up a group chat
It only takes a minute to set up a group in WhatsApp. That gives you a fun, easy way to share news, photos and the odd joke to make your family feel more connected. It’s much more personal than Facebook and you canparticipate whenever it’s convenient for you.

  2. Schedule regular catch ups
Once you’ve got your group chat set up, use it to organise regular events, birthday catch-ups etc. – giving plenty of notice so everyone is more likely to be free. It saves a bunch of phone calls and ensures everyone gets the same information at the same time.

  3. Book a family holiday
If you don’t get to see family much in normal life due to conflicting schedules or distance, a joint holiday could be a good way to ensure some meaningful interaction. With a bit of luck everyone will enjoy it and it could become a regular thing.

  4. Take on a project/goal together
If you’re thinking you’d like to run a half marathon, attend an art class or sign-up to a book club, invite a family member to do it with you. Having a common activity is a great way to ensure regular contact that also benefits you physically and/or socially.

  5. Offerto babysit
If you have siblings with little ones, offer to give them a much-appreciated break by looking after their kids. Not only is it great for the parents, it’s a perfect way for you to strengthen the bond you have with your nieces and nephews.

  6. Keep elderly relatives engaged
Our elderly citizens have been some of the hardest hit by COVID-19, given the extra restrictions on aged care facilities. This year is a chance to rekindle regular visits, or even better, bring your elderly relatives along to your regular family catch ups. Who knows, they might even be keen to join your WhatsApp group!
