Introduction
In this Privacy Policy “Zurich”, “we”, “our” and “us” means Zurich Financial Services Australia Limited and all the Zurich companies listed below in the section on ‘Which Companies are covered by this Policy’. This Privacy Policy also applies to “OnePath branded” products issued by Zurich companies.
We value the privacy of your Personal Information. We comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), as amended, including the Privacy and Other Amendments Act 2024 (Cth), and other applicable laws and regulations. By applying for, renewing, using any of our products or services, making a claim or providing us with your Personal Information you consent to your information being collected, held, used and disclosed as set out in this Privacy Policy.
This Privacy Policy should be read in conjunction with the Privacy Statement that was issued in respect to the type of relationship you have with us. To review a sample privacy statement, please refer to the ‘Zurich’s Privacy Statement’ section.

Collection of Personal Information
What is Personal Information?
Personal Information is information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable:
- whether the information or opinion is true or not; and
- whether the information or opinion is recorded in a material form or not.
What type of information does Zurich collect and hold?
The type of Personal Information we hold about you or other individuals varies depending on the type of product or service we provide to you. For example, Zurich will hold different Personal Information about you or other individuals if you have a life insurance policy than we will hold if you have a managed investment or a general insurance product. We may also hold different information if we are providing you with financial advice as your financial adviser.
In general, Zurich may hold the following Personal Information:
- name and address;
- date of birth; and
- contact details, which may include your telephone number, residential address and email address.
Depending on the type of product or service you select we may also hold the following information about you, or other insured parties:
- occupation;
- details of property that is being insured;
- government issued identification numbers such as tax file number, driving license or passport number, where you have given it to us;
- payment card number or bank account details;
- insurance claim information, where this is relevant;
- employment information;
- salary;
- the names and addresses of dependents or beneficiaries;
- information about personal financial circumstances; and
- other information that you have given us.
We may also collect sensitive information such as:
- health or medical information;
- racial or ethnic origin;
- sexual preferences or practices;
- membership of political, professional or trade associations; and
- criminal convictions and driving offences.
We only collect and hold sensitive information with your consent, which the laws allow in limited situations.
If we are not able to collect your Personal Information, we may not be able to process your application, administer your policy, assess your claim or provide you with financial advice (where we are your financial adviser).
Where you apply for employment or another role or position with Zurich, we may collect or hold the following:
- employment history;
- education qualifications and professional associations;
- details of your referees;
- details of your eligibility for employment such as residency status;
- other information required as part of the recruitment process; and
- background checks, where you have given your consent to us.
How does Zurich collect and hold your Personal Information?
We collect your Personal Information so that we can perform our various functions and activities. We also collect your Personal Information if the law requires us to collect it. If we do not collect your Personal Information, we may not be able to deal with you, or provide you with a product or service. If you apply for one of our products or services, we may collect and hold information from you such as information pertaining to the categories listed in the section above.
We may collect Personal Information about you and other individuals in different ways including:
- in writing, including by electronic or hard copy forms;
- by telephone;
- by email;
- in person; and
- over the internet such as via our website, cookies, online forms or social media.
We may collect your information:
- Directly from you. For example, you provide us with your information when you fill in an application form, deal with us over the telephone, send us a letter or use our websites and customer portals.
- From publicly available sources of information, such as telephone directories, the electoral roll or other websites.
- From other parties including:
- your intermediary, broker or professional adviser(s);
- other insurers, reinsurers or distribution partners;
- our service providers and business partners;
- organisations that we have an arrangement with to jointly offer products or services including non-Zurich branded products or services;
- organisations that we have an alliance with to share information for marketing purposes to provide you with products or services and/or to promote a product or service, including joint issuers of Zurich and OnePath branded products;
- superannuation fund trustees holding Zurich or OnePath branded products, other organisations including those in an alliance with us, to co-issue, distribute, improve, manage and administer our products and services, carry out business functions and undertake analytics activities;
- our related entities so we can better manage your relationship with us;
- marketing companies if we acquire contact information to tell you about our products and services that may interest you;
- third parties who, at the time of collection, have notified you that your information will be provided to us;
- medical practitioners where relevant for the purposes of managing or administering our products including assessing your application or claim;
- government, statutory or regulatory body and law enforcement bodies;
- other third parties; and
- anyone that you have authorised to deal with us or where you have consented to them providing your information to us.
We may also collect information about how you use Zurich’s and other websites to help us better tailor our services. For example, we may do this when you click on a link from our website or visit a website which displays our advertisement. Usually, the information we collect in this way is general information only derived from cookies – such as the number of visitors to a site or statistics about how a site is browsed – and does not identify you. If we do identify you with this information (for example, if you have been logged onto one of our online services), any use or disclosure of that information will be in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
If you provide Personal Information to us about another individual, you must:
- inform them that you are disclosing their Personal Information to us;
- collect their consent to do so;
- make them aware of the content of this privacy policy; and
- direct them to this Zurich Privacy Policy
Sensitive information is Personal Information about a person’s:
- racial or ethnic origin;
- political opinion;
- membership of a political association;
- religious beliefs or affiliations;
- philosophical beliefs;
- membership of a professional or trade association;
- membership of a trade union;
- sexual orientation or practices;
- criminal record; and
- any type of genetic information, health information, biometric information that is used for identification or biometric templates.
We will not collect, use or disclose sensitive information about you unless we need the information for one of our functions or activities and we have your consent (or we are legally required to do so). For example, with your consent, we may collect health information from you and your medical practitioner to assess life insurance applications, manage policies, or process claims under life insurance or certain general insurance policies where health details are relevant, such as travel or liability claims. We may also collect sensitive information about you if your family members apply for products such as life insurance or trauma and disablement cover. We may also collect certain sensitive information through customer surveys or questionnaires so that we may obtain your feedback and provide further information to you about our products or services. More information about our marketing practices can be found in the section titled “Marketing and Privacy” in this document.
Collecting information required by law
We may collect information from you because we are required or authorised by an Australian law or court or tribunal order. We will tell you if collection is required or authorised by law and provide you with details of the law, court or tribunal order. We are authorised by the Superannuation Industry Supervision Act 1993 to request that you provide your Australian tax file number (TFN). If we collect your TFN, we will handle your TFN in accordance with the Privacy Act and the TFN Rule issued by the Tax Commissioner. The TFN Rule regulates the collection, storage, use, disclosure, security and disposal of individuals' TFN information.
We may also be required to ask about your tax residency status under taxation information sharing agreements the Australian Government has in place with other countries. For example, a tax treaty between Australia and the United States means Australian taxation law has enacted the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act locally which requires us to ask account holders of some types of products whether they are US citizens or US tax residents. If you are a tax resident of another country, the relevant treaty or law may require us to collect your relevant foreign tax identification number.
Your Consent is Important
We may require your consent to use and/or disclose your information in certain ways. For example, we need your consent if we use your information for a purpose that is not reasonably related to the reason we collected it. Depending on the circumstances, this consent may be express (such as ticking a box) or implied (such as agreeing to product terms and conditions that explain how your information will be used).
By providing us with your information, you consent to our use and disclosure of your Personal Information for purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, including:
- providing you with products and services;
- complying with legal and regulatory obligations; and
- communicating with you about products and services that may be relevant to your needs, including offerings from us and, where appropriate, from our related entities and business partners. You can opt out of marketing communications at any time.
If you provide your information through an intermediary like a broker or adviser, we will collect, use, and disclose it as permitted by law and in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Where required, we will seek your consent directly before using your Personal Information for purposes beyond those necessary to provide our products and services or comply with legal obligations.
We are subject to applicable laws, including the Life Insurance Act 1995, Insurance Act 1973, Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993, Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, Personal Property Securities Act 2009, Corporations Act 2001, Insurance Contracts Act 1984, Autonomous Sanctions Act 2011, Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, Income Tax Assessment Act 1936, Income Tax Regulations 1936, Tax Administration Act 1953, Tax Administration Regulations 1976, A new Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999, Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 and other relevant legislation, as those laws are amended, and includes any associated regulations. From time to time, other Acts may require, or authorise us to collect your Personal Information.
Purposes for Collection, Use, and Disclosure
The Purposes for which Zurich Collects, Holds, Uses and Discloses this Information
Zurich provides products and services, such as:
- general insurance;
- life insurance;
- investments;
- superannuation; and
- financial advice
We collect, hold, use and disclose your Personal Information for the purposes of providing you with products and services and managing our business including after your policy ceases to be in-force or you have ceased to received services from us, such as:
- to assess your application e.g. assessing the risk and underwriting your policy;
- to administer the products or services provided to you. for example, issuing a renewal or amending your policy;
- to manage a claim e.g. managing and assessing claims made under your policy or recovering monies paid to you or debts you have incurred;
- to provide you with advice as your financial adviser;
- to comply with our legal obligations e.g. laws relating to anti money laundering;
- to enhance customer service and product options e.g. conducting customer research or customer satisfaction surveys to improve our services and products;
- to correct any errors or other actions or omissions and to deliver customer compensation and other remediation activities;
- to co-operate with regulatory-enforcement related activity (including investigation and remediation of errors, actions or omissions);
- to assist code compliance bodies in monitoring compliance with industry codes;
- purposes communicated to you at the time we collected your Personal Information; and
- other purposes consented to by you, or as required or permitted by law.
Using Your Personal Information
We may use and disclose Personal Information we collect about you for several purposes, including after your policy ceases to be in-force or you have ceased to receive services from us. This includes:
- to consider your request for a product or service;
- to enable us to provide a product or service (including the assessment of an application for insurance, or provide you with financial advice where we are your financial adviser);
- to tell you about other products and services that we believe may be of interest to you;
- to assist in arrangements with other organisations (such as loyalty partners and alliance partners) in relation to the promotion or provision of a product or service;
- to manage and improve products, perform administrative and operational tasks (such as risk management, claims processing, systems development, data analytics, staff training, and customer research), correct errors or omissions including overseeing customer compensation or remediation where required;
- to assist our reinsurers and financial advisers provide their services in relation to your product;
- to consider any concerns or complaints you raise against us and/or to manage any dispute or legal action between you and us;
- for business functions and activities conducted by or with our related entities (such as compliance reporting, information management, claims management and risk management);
- to co-operate with regulatory enforcement related activity (including investigation and remediation of errors actions or omissions even after your policy ceases to be in force or to prevent or investigate any actual or suspected fraud, unlawful activity or other conduct;
- to assist code compliance bodies in monitoring compliance with industry codes. Where possible, we deidentify or redact information and only disclose what is reasonably necessary; and
- as required by relevant laws, regulations and codes of practice.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
We may use your Personal Information with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for the delivery and enhancement of our products and services. AI is used in accordance with privacy laws, regulatory requirements, and our Data and AI Governance frameworks. Activities may include:
- detection and prevention of fraud or scams;
- responding to enquiries and support interactions, including online chat and routing communications for efficient handling;
- summarising information and interactions so we can assist you more efficiently;
- assisting in claims handling processes;
- assisting in underwriting processes, and supporting efficiency in decision-making;
- identification of trends in how our products and services are used to enhance customer experiences; and
- improvement in operational efficiency.
Automated decision-making (ADM) refers to a process where decisions are made by computer systems without human intervention, using pre-defined data inputs and rules. Where such decisions may have a significant effect on you (for example, where the decision may affect your eligibility for a product or service) Zurich:
- explains the logic involved in automated decisions, where appropriate;
- regularly assesses these systems for fairness, accuracy, and transparency; and
- ensures a human review is available on request.
Marketing
We may use your Personal Information to provide you with information, offers, products or services that we believe are relevant to your needs or may benefit you. This may include offerings from Zurich and, where appropriate, from our intermediaries, distributors, related entities or business partners. In some cases, we may share your Personal Information (but never sensitive information) with business partners we have arrangements with so they can communicate with you about relevant products and services.
We may contact and market to you via any available technologies, including email, mail, digital platform, telephone, SMS and online. Your Personal Information may be retained for marketing purposes unless you choose to opt out. If you do not want your Personal Information to be used in this way or you want to opt out of receiving marketing communications, you can do so by:

If you opt out of receiving marketing communications from us, we may still need to communicate with you about an existing product you have or a service. This is so you can be informed about important information such as updates to product features and pricing costs.
We do not use or disclose sensitive information for direct marketing, and we do not sell or pass mailing lists to any third parties.
Who does Zurich share information with?
Zurich will, where relevant and subject to any consents required under applicable law, disclose your Personal Information (including in some cases sensitive information) to:
- Other companies in the global Swiss based Zurich Insurance Group Ltd (the” Zurich Group”). The business activities of the Zurich Group are performed by various business functions which will sometimes require the exchange of information between various Zurich entities around the world.
- An intermediary, including a professional adviser(s) or any other representative or person acting on behalf of yourself or a joint insured on your policy.
- Other insurers or distribution partners as required to carry out activities such as providing insurance or managing a claim.
- Reinsurers for the purposes of reinsuring policies (for a list of relevant reinsurers and their contact details please contact the privacy officer, see below).
- Service providers that assist us in carrying out our business activities, such as, investigators, claims adjusters, claims administrators, surveyors, repairers, builders, engineers, assessors, recovery agents, insurance reference bureaus, accountants, auditors, hospitals or medical professionals, rehabilitation providers, legal advisers, mediators, IT providers, suppliers, professional advisers, image and document management service provider or mailing houses.
- An Australian financial service licence holder, where we carry out business activities as your financial adviser.
- Our business partners, including for example a corporate or alliance partner (such as a company that referred you to Zurich) or to whom Zurich refers you for products or services.
- Other third parties as required to carry out activities such as assessing a claim in the event of loss or damage, including financial institutions (who for example issued the credit card under which a claim is made), another party involved in a court action or a claim (such as a third party claimant or witness), insurances bodies (such as the Insurance Council of Australia, Financial Services Council, Council of Australian Life Insurers), dispute resolution bodies including the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), external administrators (particularly for investment and superannuation products), an employer, the policy owner, other insureds, custodian or trustee (who is associated with a superannuation fund, investment or managed fund or a life insurance policy) and interested parties on a policy (for example a bank or premium funder).
- Government, statutory or regulatory body and law enforcement bodies, such as tax authorities, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, AUSTRAC, Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, Centrelink, work cover authorities, Service NSW or other authority bodies, Motor Accident Authority, Roads and Maritime Services or the Police.
- Industry code compliance bodies such as the Life Code Compliance Committee and the General Insurance Code Governance Committee to help them monitor or review compliance with industry codes. Where possible, we de identify or redact information and only disclose what is reasonably necessary.

When do we disclose Personal Information to overseas entities?
In accordance with the purposes for which we have collected your Personal Information, we may disclose your Personal Information to a party located outside Australia. For example, we may disclose your Personal Information outside Australia:
- for reinsurance purposes to reinsurers;
- for Zurich Group wide activities and reporting purposes;
- for product or claims referrals to other Zurich Group companies;
- for information technology / system administration purposes;
- to provide emergency medical assistance services while you are abroad; and
- to support administration of your policy.
The countries where the person or company is likely to be located include Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Guernsey, India, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Poland, South Africa and United States of America. Also as part of a global insurance group, in some cases we may disclose your Personal Information to another Zurich Group entity outside Australia. We may also use other offshore service providers to help provide you with our products and services or identify ways to improve our service to you.
If you have an interaction with one of our Customer Service Teams, we may send you an automated follow up request for your feedback on your experience(s). We use external service providers based overseas to help us send you the automated request and to analyse responses. We will therefore need to send your information to these locations.
The above is not a complete list of the countries to which your information may be disclosed when using our products or services. In some circumstances, the nature of the product or service you request may require us to disclose your information overseas and the countries to which we may disclose your information will depend on the particular circumstances.

How do we store and secure your Personal Information?
Zurich takes the security of your Personal Information seriously. We use a combination of technical and organisational measures that are appropriate to our business and the risks involved. These include secure systems, staff training, and regular reviews of our privacy and security practices.
We work with our service providers to help ensure your information is protected, and we regularly review our processes to maintain compliance with applicable laws.
We do not sell, rent, or disclose our customers' data to third parties without their consent or beyond the scope of the agreed services.
How Zurich Uses Cookies and Digital Tools
Cookies are small text files that help websites function and improve your experience. They may be stored temporarily during your session (session cookies) or on your device for longer periods (persistent cookies).
Zurich uses session cookies to interact with your browser and maintain secure access while you use our website. For example, after you log in, a session cookie helps validate that our systems are communicating with your browser throughout your visit. Zurich also uses web analytics tools to measure traffic patterns and improve our websites. These tools collect aggregated data such as domain names, IP addresses, pages visited, time spent, and entry/exit points. A User ID may be assigned to track engagement across sessions and devices. Analytics help us manage and develop our websites, enhance customer experience, and improve services and products.
Your rights
How does Zurich handle a request for access or correction to Personal Information?
You have the right to request access to Personal Information that we hold about you, and if applicable, to request correction.
Please contact Zurich using the contact details below in the ‘How can I contact Zurich?’ section.
Where you are entitled to access Personal Information, the time we require to give you access will depend on the type of information requested. If we can, we will answer your question immediately.
We will also try to answer you in the same way that you ask - for example, if you telephone to ask for the information we will, if practicable, give you that information over the telephone. We will generally respond to a written request in writing.
Sometimes, we will ask that you put your request in writing, for example, where it is necessary for us to retain a record of your request.
We may also ask you to identify yourself to our satisfaction at the time of requesting the information.
You may be able to access some information yourself through Zurich's customer portals. If you have difficulties finding the information you want or using the customer portals, please advise us.
In some circumstances, we may charge a fee for giving you access, which will vary but will be based on our costs (internal and external) in locating the information and the form of access you require. If we propose to charge a fee for giving access, we will give you an estimate of the fee so you can confirm that you still want us to give you access to the information. We do not impose any charge for lodging a request for access.
Please tell us if any of the Personal Information Zurich holds about you is wrong as we want our records to be accurate, complete, up to date and relevant. Unless we disagree with you about the accuracy or completeness of a record, we will generally correct it on request (or suggest alternative arrangements for updating our records). If we are unable to correct your Personal Information, we will tell you and provide you with reasons.
In some cases, we may be unable to give you access or only give you access to certain information. For example, we cannot provide or give you access to Personal Information relating to other individuals without their consent and will likely not give you access to information that is commercially sensitive. If this is the case, we will explain our decision in writing.
Withdrawing Consent
You also have the right to withdraw or change your consent to the collection, use, or disclosure of your Personal Information at any time. To do so, please contact us using the details provided in the “How can I contact Zurich” section.

Complaints and Dispute Resolution
How do I make further enquiries or complain about a breach of privacy?

Managing your complaint
Zurich will confirm that your complaint has been received within 1 business day or as soon as practicable and work to provide an outcome as quickly as possible.
Where appropriate, we will refer you to our Dispute Resolution Team who will undertake further investigations.
We will give you a dedicated contact person who will keep you regularly updated with progress and discuss options with you to resolve your complaint.
Once we have come to a decision on the outcome of your complaint, we will communicate this with you.
In most cases we will then provide the outcome of your complaint in writing. Our complaints decision will usually be provided within 30 calendar days where your complaint relates to a life insurance policy, or financial advice provided by Zurich Assure. If your complaint relates to a superannuation product a decision will be provided, in most instances, no later than 45 calendar days from when we receive it. Where we cannot resolve your complaint within this timeframe we will advise you in writing. If you are not satisfied with our response you can have your complaint reviewed by an External Dispute Resolution (EDR) scheme.
The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) is an EDR scheme that provides a fair and independent complaint resolution procedure. AFCA is a free service to customers and its contact details are:
