Zurich prices Full Self-Driving (Supervised) vehicle insurance in Australian first
Zurich Australian Insurance Limited (Zurich) today announced the inclusion of Full Self-Driving (FSD) (Supervised) technology as a rating factor for its Tesla insurance offering, marking a first for the Australian insurance industry as local uptake of the feature accelerates.
Tesla data1 indicates that vehicles using this technology have seven times fewer major or minor collisions compared with regular EVs.
Tesla FSD (Supervised) vehicles include eight external cameras which provide a 360-degree view of the environment around the car and process more than one million pixels of visual data every millisecond.
The updated InsureMyTesla offering, which draws upon local and international Tesla data, covers eligible Australian customers with FSD (Supervised) technology in their vehicle, in addition to existing benefits offered through the product such as glass and charging equipment repair.
It marks a first for Australia’s insurance industry, where currently no other provider recognises FSD (Supervised) as a risk rating factor, and the second instance of an insurer doing so globally.
Uptake of Tesla FSD (Supervised) technology has increased rapidly since launching in Australia & New Zealand in October 2025, at which point customers logged one million kilometres of driving using the feature within two weeks.
Recent data shows that local Tesla customers have now self-driven more than 132 million kilometres – more than a five-fold increase in average daily use since launch.
Alex Morgan, Head of General Insurance at Zurich said: “As vehicle technology and driver behaviour continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace, it is critical that we continue to innovate alongside this change.”
“By combining Tesla’s fine-grained data with Zurich’s sophisticated underwriting technology and motor expertise, this expanded proposition offers the same high-quality insurance at a more affordable cost due to the reduced risk associated with supervised self-driving,” Mr Morgan said.
David Toma, Product Manager at Zurich said: “This is a really exciting milestone – both for Tesla owners who are rapidly adopting this FSD (Supervised) technology, and for Zurich as the first insurer in Australia to actively lean into this space. The data shows that drivers using this technology are involved in far fewer accidents, so it’s important they can access insurance that reflects this lower risk.”
Thom Drew, Country Director, Australia & New Zealand at Tesla said: "We're pleased to see the insurance industry recognising the safety and value of FSD (Supervised). The data is clear – FSD (Supervised) is making driving significantly safer, and it's encouraging to see InsureMyTesla by Zurich pioneering this benefit and reflecting the reduced risk for Tesla owners.”
Zurich has acted as the preferred insurance provider for Tesla in Australia since 2024, building on a partnership between Zurich Group and Tesla in Switzerland since 2016.
