Keeping well this Winter

If you feel like there is a lot of sickness going around this Winter, you’re not wrong. Data shows influenza-like illness exceeding the 5-year average. At the same time, COVID-19 cases are on the rise  with the new BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron variants expected to be much more transmissible. In fact, the new variant has been compared to measles, which up until now was our most infectious viral disease.

Some experts are referring to it as ‘double trouble’ when a pandemic and seasonal virus collide. While there may be reason for concern, it’s also a time to act - to make health a priority to ensure you stay healthy or feel healthier if illness does arise.

Top tips to stay healthy this winter

Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly
Hand washing with soap and water is the most effective way to reduce the spread of virus’. This means washing your hands for at least 20 seconds.

Keep a safe distance
We are social creatures by nature, but – for now – keep a safe space in elevators, waiting lines and other confined spaces.

Stay up to date with Vaccines
While much is still to be learnt about COVID-19, vaccines have proven to be very effective in preventing disease severity and Long COVID. Likewise, it’s important to get vaccinated against the flu every year to be protected against most recent strains.

Practice good health habits
CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school regularly. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, stay physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of water, and eat nutritious food.

Top tips to feel healthier this winter if illness does arise

Stay home
If you feel unwell, stay home. If you develop a fever, cough or sore throat, self-isolation is still a good idea, even if it is only a cold it will help prevent the spread. 

Rest and recover
Now is the time to rest to let your body heal. That means putting your daily routine on hold until you start to feel better. Rest and sleep can improve recovery time and reduce your risk of complications.    

Keep fluids in balance
Your body needs extra fluids to fight off infection and to stay hydrated. Be sure to drinks lots and eat a healthy diet to replenish vitamins and minerals.   

Take medication if needed
There are plenty of over-the-counter medications to help relieve specific symptoms such as pain relief, decongestants and cough suppressants. You can also speak to your doctor about anti-viral drugs if you’re at high risk of developing complications.

While it may not be possible to avoid illness all together, we can do what we can to stay healthy and build immunity to feel healthier if sickness does strike.
