After several days of record-breaking rain, NSW is experiencing a once in a fifty-year flood caused by a La Nina weather event. So far:
- 18,000 have been people evacuated in Sydney and the Mid-North coast where homes and livelihoods have been lost.
- 900 direct flood rescues have occurred.
- 130 school closures and road closures have been cut off by water.
- around 450 gigalitres of water a day has been released from Sydney’s main water supply the Warragamba Dam - equal to the contents of Sydney Harbour, which is around 500 gigalitres.
The floods come less than 18-months after Australia was gripped by a bushfire crisis, with many of the same towns affected. This event is very likely to have a devastating impact on the mental wellbeing and livelihoods in these NSW communities, many of whom were still trying to recover from the bushfires.
