Income replacement claims

Income protection provides an Income benefit after the expiry of the waiting period if, solely due to sickness or injury:

  • Until the expiry of the waiting period the insured's pre-disability income from his/her usual occupation has reduced by 20 per cent or more, or
  • The insured is unable to perform one or more income producing duties of his/her usual occupation, or
  • The insured is unable to perform income producing duties for more than 10 hours per week, and
  • The insured is under the regular care of, and following the advice of, a medical practitioner.

Step 1: Ensure the life insured has the following information available

Indemnity policy (and life insured is totally disabled) Agreed value policy (and life insured is totally disabled)
  • Full financial statements for the highest 12 months within the 24 months prior to the date of injury or sickness including: business and personal income tax returns and profit and loss statements together with notices of assessment.
    AND
  • Copies of any medical reports or investigations which the life insured may have.
  • Copies of any medical reports or investigations which the life insured may have.
Indemnity policy (and client is partially disabled) Agreed value policy (and client is partially disabled)
  • Full financial statements for the highest 12 months within the 24 months prior to the date of injury or sickness including: business and personal income tax returns and profit and loss statements together with notices of assessment.
    AND
  • Copies of any medical reports or investigations which the life insured may have. Note:- If the claim continues then for each month that the life insured is partially disabled they need to provide full financial statements which substantiate an ongoing loss of earnings.
  • Full financial statements for the highest 12 months earnings starting 12 months immediately prior the commencement of the policy and ending with the date of injury or sickness including: business and personal income tax returns and profit and loss statements together with notices of assessment.
    (e.g. date of injury is 1/1/2008, the policy commenced on 1/1/2005 - the life insured needs to provide the financial statements for the highest consecutive 12 months of income for the period 1/1/2004 to 1/1/2008)
    AND
  • Copies of any medical reports or investigations which the life insured may have. Note:- If the claim continues then for each month that the life insured is partially disabled they need to provide full financial statements which substantiate an ongoing loss of earnings.

Step 2: Complete claim forms

Print out the claim forms and have the relevant party complete them.
