Super changes back on the agenda; the key to capitalising on AREITs, and investable opportunities in driverless technology

It seems the devil is in the detail when it comes to the government’s planned changes to superannuation. While the first tranche of draft legislation was announced earlier this month and has largely been welcomed by the industry, Treasurer Scott Morrison is still consulting with the cantankerous coalition backbench on the more contentious items promised in the May budget.

Ultimately, value gets recognised

The recent reporting season in the Australian listed property sector has highlighted the value of an active approach. While the sector overall has been in favour with investors for its attractive dividend yield, particularly given the low interest rate environment, active managers add value by being able to successfully and consistently exploit dispersion in returns within the sector itself.

How Pokémon GO, Brexit and new leadership are impacting investment behaviour

What a wild few weeks we’ve had. And I say this with the full knowledge of the raft of uncertainty that investors have had to face this year already. Betting on Brexit; the podcast revolution; and where clients are rating advisers ‘most trusted’

While we haven’t even reached the halfway point of 2016 yet, people across the globe are already gearing up for a potential change in leadership. At the time of writing, citizens of the UK are preparing to head to the polls to vote on “Brexit” – the proposed British exit from the EU. Live odds from Ladbrokes have 71% to remain and 29% to leave, which has reduced quite significantly from around 40% last week. Unsurprisingly, this uncertainty has unsettled market in the past fortnight and is being seen as a much greater problem than last year’s “Grexit” (Greek exit), which led to multiple plunges on the S&P/ASX 200.

The potential for cybercrime has grown dramatically over the past few years as cyber criminals continue to adopt more profitable and effective tactics. Making a call on whether ‘growth’ or ‘value’ will perform better in a given market is tough. Perhaps one way to sidestep the need to ‘call’ the market is to re-think the definition for growth? The question to ask is not ‘what is a growth stock’, but rather ‘when’ is a company a growth stock.
